Well that didn't take long.
No. 8 ranked bantamweight Cody Garbrandt made extremely quick work of Japanese veteran Takeya Mizugaki as the UFC 202 preliminary card main event on Fox Sports 1.
The 25-year-old opened the first round with a brutal leg kick, but Mizugaki fired back with a nice left hook. The 135 lb. contenders traded hands for a bit, but Garbrandt was able to land a nice right hand which dropped the No. 11 ranked underdog. A few ground-and-pound hammerfists later, and that was all she wrote for the 32-year-old journeyman.
Garbrandt was able to finish Mizugaki via technical knockout in just :48 seconds.
"It was a great fight," Garbrandt told Joe Rogan in the octagon following the fight. "I respect him as a veteran and I knew I had to put him away early."
Now on a four-fight win streak, Gabrandt is just one victory behind bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz as having the most wins in the division. The rising star took the opportunity call out the title holder after his big win.
"I'm going to break your jaw," Garbrandt said. "I'm going to show you who your daddy is for real."
The champ, who was listening in from the analysts booth, definitely seems interested.
