Daniel Cormier seemed like a broken man when he heard the news that Jon Jones was being pulled from UFC 200. He had trained for months and the rivalry between the two is particularly draining. Though he was able to get a replacement fight with Anderson Silva, it wasn't the fight that UFC fans wanted to see and many were disappointed in the matchup. This time around, Cormier is hoping to give the fans a fight that they can be excited about.
Cormier announced on Wednesday's broadcast of UFC Tonight who he plans to fight in his next title defense. Though he won't know for sure until after UFC 202, DC wants to fight the winner of the Anthony "Rumble" Johnson and Glover Teixeira co-main event.
DC previously fought Johnson at UFC 187 for the vacant Light Heavyweight Championship. Cormier was winning the fight before submitting Johnson with a rear-naked choke. Cormier has never fought Teixeira, but it would make an interesting match up for the champ. Teixeira is currently ranked No. 3 at 205 and has knocked out his last two opponents. The fight at UFC 202 could go either way, but DC will be ready for either opponent.
Cormier also spoke about a future rematch with Jones. For the time being, Cormier does not see it happening. He feels as though Jones will have to once again prove himself in order to get his title shot.
Though DC won't want to fight Jones, it may be a hard one for him to avoid if Jones is cleared of any wrongdoing for failing the USADA drug test prior to UFC 200. Jones is still one of the biggest draws in MMA and has been one of the most dominant fighters in the sport. But a potential two-year suspension could derail his mission to cement himself as the greatest fighter of all time.
Whether Jones returns to the Octagon or not, Cormier has to move on. With his sights set on Johnson or Teixeira, he knows what he has to prepare himself for. We will see if the UFC execs are willing to make this fight happen, or if they feel another 205er is more deserving of the title shot.
