Daniel Cormier defeats Anderson Silva at UFC 200 on Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Cormier came away with the unanimous decision win over Silva with judges scoring 30-26 for Cormier.
"The fight went how it had to go," Cormier said in his post fight interview.
Silva took the fight on just two days notice after Cormier's planned opponent, Jon Jones, was flagged by USADA for a potential doping issue.
"This fight was a big personal challenge," Silva said in his post fight interview. "This is proof you can do anything you put your mind to."
The respect shown between the two directly after the fight was remarkable.
Cormier took Silva to the ground pretty easily in round one and was able to land a few elbows, but Anderson was able to avoid any real damage from the much heavier Cormier.
Round two started with a stunning head kick by Anderson but Cormier took him down again easily, much to the disappointed boos from the crowd. The referee stood the pair up with 1:30 left in round two where Anderson landed a powerful knee to end the round.
Silva entered the third round strong, landing a powerful head kick, but again couldn't avoid the takedown. After the referee stands the pair up Silva lands a liver kick that stuns Cormier and it looks like he might have a chance to get the stoppage, but it didn't happen for Silva who ended up in a clinch with Cormier and just seconds left in the round.
"I can't complain," he said. "I did what I had to do."
