Stephen Thompson continues to rise above the occasion.

"Wonderboy" topped the highly touted Rory MacDonald in their main event at UFC Ottawa on Saturday night.

Thompson remained active on the feet and threw various combinations on his way to a unanimous decision with scores of 50-45, 50-45 and 48-47.

Early on in the fight, MacDonald attempted a number of rolling leg locks in an effort to take away his opponent's notable stand-up game. Thompson became wise to his opponent's approach and did well to prevent getting trapped in a submission.

Thompson stayed at range and didn't take a lot of damage. He did, however, deal it out in heavy portions, leaving MacDonald bloody going into the championship rounds.

MacDonald began to turn up the offense in the fourth round, pressing Thompson and setting the pace as the backing fighter attempted counterpunches.

In the fifth and final round, MacDonald, seemingly aware he was down on the scorecards, began to throw strikes in higher volume. He struck Thompson with a number of punches, but also ate a few for his efforts.

In the end, Thompson overcame MacDonald's late offense and secured the decision win, asking for a title shot and the winner of the UFC 201 main event between champ Robbie Lawler and challenger Tyron Woodley.

Lawler, we're sure, was watching this fight and is now officially in soul-eater mode.
