Former middleweight champ Chris Weidman had to pull out of his rematch with Luke Rockhold just weeks before their UFC 199 fight due to issues pertaining to his neck.

And according to MMA Fighting he has undergone surgery to fix the injury that sidelined him.

The successful surgery was performed by Dr. K. Daniel Riew on Wednesday in New York, according to the website. Weidman was back home later that night.

According to Weidman, who spoke to Ariel Helwani, he'll begin physical therapy and strength training on Thursday and resume sparring in six weeks.

Weidman has been vocal about returning to the UFC for it's first ever show in his home state of New York. Now that Rockhold has lost the title it's likely he'd be facing the new middleweight champion, Michael Bisping.

Weidman tweeted during the fight he was originally scheduled for.

Who would you like to see Weidman face upon his return to the octagon?
