Scary news has been reported out of the Chorrilos district of Lima, Peru. UFC's Valentina Shevchenko was caught in the middle of a shootout late Sunday night, with her long time trainer Pavel Fedotov sadly being shot and taken to the emergency room.
Peruvian news outlet El Comercio reported the news on Monday, alleging that three armed robbers entered the establishment on Sunday evening making off with 5,000 soles (roughly $1,486) from the cash register, as well as cellphones and wallets from the store's customers.
Once the robbers were making their escape, Fedotov opened fire with a gun he was carrying which resulted in the alleged shootout, which resulted in the death of one of the robbers and injuries to two customers. Fedotov was reportedly shot in the abdomen and is currently still in Casimiro Ulloa hospital.
The distressing scenario was captured by security cameras, with Shevchenko being seen in the video rushing to her coach's aid after the shooting ceased.
Shevchenko is set to face former UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm at UFC on FOX 20 on July 23 in Chicago. The highly anticipated fight will see Holm's return to the Octagon following her defeat via submission at the hands of Miesha Tate. Although Holm is seen as the strong favorite, multi-time Muay Thai champion Shevchenko will provide a daunting challenge, especially if underestimated.
Our current thoughts are with Pavel Fedotov. The Champions.co team wishes you a speedy recovery and hope to see you cage-side soon.
