It's a fight that would potentially generate the biggest PPV gate in the history of both boxing and MMA, yet it's also a fight that's completely divided fans. Not just MMA fans, but also boxing fans.
The idea of a superfight between boxing legend Floyd Mayweather and current UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor is a pretty controversial one.
In the world of boxing, many expect Money Mayweather to return for one last fight in an attempt to take his record to 50-0. Of course, to get Mayweather back in the ring will mean one thing has to be present – a hell of a lot of cash. Right now, it seems like Conor is the perfect individual to generate the multi-million dollar signs that "The Money Team" are craving.
With each of the fighters alluding to the idea that the fight may happen, each have posted to their social media accounts different mock up promotional posters, with Mayweather's, as seen above, looking much more amateur than McGregor's. Constantly being brought up by the media in various interviews, it looks like whether we like it or not this fight is going to be the talk of the sports world until we get a definitive answer.
The match up in itself is an extremely interesting one for fight fans. With both fighters hailing from different worlds, on paper it looks like Mayweather has a ridiculous advantage. Surely a mixed martial artist stepping into the ring with one of the greatest boxers of all time is just stupid?
Well... perhaps not exactly...
McGregor is known for his heavy left hand. The strike has crumbled numerous opponents in the UFC, including the devastating 13-second knockout of former featherweight champ Jose Aldo. If McGregor were to step inside the ring with Mayweather, it looks like his best chance of success would be to go for the knockout.
Stalking Mayweather around the ring and utilizing his reach to his advantage could perhaps garner the "Notorious" one a historic win, and one that would surely go down in history books.
But here's the catch: Mayweather is a master tactician inside the boxing ring. Where some shout boring, others scream masterclass. He is well aware that boxing can be both a sprint and a marathon. Eluding McGregor throughout the fight and going for a points win could be the perfect strategy to both humble the brash Irishman and also secure a colossal 50th career win.
Mayweather has experience going the distance inside boxing rings, and while McGregor has experience doing the same in the Octagon, it's two completely different ball parks. We've seen the native Dubliner gas out in the second round against Nate Diaz and if he were to do that against Mayweather then we can only assume that the record-breaking boxer would simply pick the Irishman off.
Of course, all of the above is just speculation. Personally, I'm not a fan of the match-up but like many others would definitely tune in to watch it. I feel a knockout would be the only way that McGregor could walk out a winner, and with that left hand anything is possible. An intriguing match up to say the least, let us know below what you think the outcome would be!
