Joseph Benavidez spoke with Champions.co this week following the recent announcement of him being named as a coach on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter.
"I'm excited to get in there and do it, there's a lot of great fighters out there," he said.
He, along with Henry Cejudo, will coach TUF 24, but with a plot twist. Dun dun DUHHHNN! The winner of the season will face Flyweight Champ Demetrious Johnson.
"I am training a guy who is essentially fighting for what I should be fighting for," he said. "If anything is odd about it, it's definitely that."
He says that his fans are passionate, and are crying out for him to get the title shot instead of the winner of TUF.
"I see the bigger picture, I'm actually great with it. It's going to be a great experience," Benavidez said. "It gives the much needed shakeup in the division."
He said that he's confident people are going to watch because it's an interesting format.
When asked how he feels about training potential opponents or sharing trade secrets he laughed and said that isn't an issue for him. He is looking at them as training partners. He says that TUF isn't a place to make fighters. You are not sharing secrets with them.
"They are already good. They are there for a reason," he said. "I look at it as training with eight world-class flyweights."
