Just a few weeks ago video of Conor McGregor sparring with boxing champ Chris van Heerden surfaced and added fuel to the rumors of a possible superfight between the UFC's biggest star and boxing's poster boy.
Van Heerden spoke exclusively with Champions.co this week to dish on McGregor and his chances in a fight with Mayweather.
"He's an amazing guy," he added. "I've been in the ring with a lot of super stars like Miguel Cotto, Canelo Álvarez and Sugar Shane Mosley. Big, big fighters. And when I was asked to help McGregor... it was wow. I'm a kid from South Africa, stuff like this doesn't happen to kids from South Africa."
Van Heerden isn't just another boxer looking for his chance in the spotlight. He’s former IBO World & IBF International Champion. He’s legit.
He said that he and McGregor shared a few good rounds inside the ring.
"I never knew that he had a boxing background," he said. "McGregor knows how to use his hands. You can see easily that he's a great fighter."
That's a huge compliment coming from someone who has worked with a hard-hitting Alvarez.
"He's got a pretty good stand-up game and I bet he'd beat a lot of pro fighters in the boxing world," he said. "With the whole Mayweather thing coming up, it's interesting. Mayweather is 49-0 for a reason."
He said that if the fight does happen, it would be unfair… to other boxers.
"There's so many boxers out there that deserve the bigger shot," he said.
He didn't think the fight happening was that unbelievable, though.
"Money talks, and there's a lot of money involved here," he said. "And with the names like Mayweather and McGregor this might just happen."
He says if the superfight does happen, he will be watching.
