Miesha Tate is set for her first title defense at UFC 200 this summer, but instead of the usual Holly Holm or Ronda Rousey facing her, it's going to be Amanda Nunes that gets the call. But when Tate went on UFC Tonight to talk about the matchup, she was asked about another fighter: Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino.
Cyborg is going to be making her UFC debut at UFC 198 in Brazil against Leslie Smith at catchweight.
The current UFC women's bantamweight champion was asked if she thought it was fair that Cyborg's debut in the UFC was going to be at catchweight. Here's what Tate had to say:
"That's interesting, you know catchweight seems to be a foreign concept. I feel like it's not something that really happens in the UFC, but we also know that Cyborg has said that she's not going to be able to make 135 [pounds]. So it's interesting to see this whole, kind of like, 'Are we gonna meet in the middle?' They finally made that catchweight and Leslie Smith is gonna go out there and make her attempt at beating Cris Cyborg. So I'm curious to see whether she is going to attempt to drop to 135 after that."
At that point, the next question was an obvious one. Would Tate fight Cyborg at 140 pounds?
"Yeah, absolutely. Unfortunately they didn't offer me that fight in the first place. So I didn't get that opportunity, but yes, hopefully in the future it'll be something that can come together and that would be an ultimate test and — man, I fell like that girl eats girls for breakfast, you know? So how cool would it be to get in there with someone of her stature?"
Tate was then asked about Rousey and whether she deserves a title shot when she makes her return later this year:
"Yeah, I think if she wants it, she was the best female fighter on the planet for a long time and I think she should be able to come back and try to get the title back."
But Tate warns Rousey that it's not going to be easy for the former champ:
"She's got a tall order in that, you know? I'm feeling like I'm at the top of my game. I'm on a five-fight win streak, I feel like I have an amazing camp finally got behind me and I'm ready. I'm ready to defend this thing."
