Cris "Cyborg" Justino is finally entering the UFC in May, when she takes on Leslie Smith at UFC 198. However, Smith wasn't the original plan. The first name thrown out was none other than former bantamweight champion, Holly Holm.
Unfortunately, we won't be seeing that superfight just yet. Holm turned the offer down because she has one, and only one, fighter in her sights: Miesha Tate.
Holm's agent, Lenny Fresquez, confirmed that fact when he spoke to the Albuquerque Journal.
“We were not interested in that right now. (Holm) just wants to fight Miesha.”
Holm took the title from Ronda Rousey last November, but lost it soon after at UFC 196, when she was choked unconscious late in the 5th round by Tate. According to the judge's scorecards, she was up three rounds to one before the two bantamweight fighters entered the 5th.
Holm's victory over Rousey is still considered one of the biggest upsets in MMA history. Holm didn't keep her newly gotten title long though, losing to Tate only a few months later.
Fresquez is hopeful that Holm will get another shot at Tate, and that's not completely out of the realm of possibilities. At first, UFC President Dana White, announced that Tate (and her title) would wait for Rousey to finish up with Hollywood. Tate, on the other hand, stated that she's not really up for waiting and would take on whoever, whenever.
Then, on Wednesday, White hinted that a women's fight is going to be added to the UFC 200 main card, and that it "could" possibly be a "title fight." Does that mean a possible Holm-Tate rematch will happen in July?
“Miesha was in Australia on vacation, so (UFC executives) were supposed to get with her this week. Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks we’ll know. But whether it’s Miesha or Ronda, those are the fights we’re interested in. (Fighting Rousey or Tate) is pretty much what Holly wants to do. If they have something else, it’s my job to present it to her. I’ve made her wishes known to them.”
If it were up to Holm and Fresquez, a rematch at UFC 200 couldn't make them happier. Holm told the Journal:
“I really want that rematch, but I’m not the one with the title now. I’m not the one with the belt. So I have to be patient and wait for that opportunity to come. Right now, what’s on my heart is the rematch. (But) I don’t necessarily want to be too picky, either. I’m the one coming off a loss. I can’t expect to have everything handed to me, so we’ll see what happens.”
Her loss to Tate was the first in Holm's MMA career and clearly, Holm wants that on me back.
