Cris "Cyborg" Justino has been lobbying hard to fight at UFC 198, which will take place in her hometown of Curitiba, Brazil. The veteran MMA fighter took to Twitter to try and fire fans up to lobby for her inclusion in the event.
The good news for Cyborg? It worked. Cyborg will make her UFC debut when she squares off against Leslie Smith, a veteran MMA fighter, at the event. Part of the reason Cyborg and the UFC haven't worked out in the past is that Cyborg fights in the 145 pound featherweight division, a division that doesn't exist in the UFC. Based on the early reports from the UFC, the matchup with Smith will be contested at 140 pounds.
Cyborg started her professional MMA career with a loss. She subsequently went on a fantastic 15 win undefeated streak. It would have been 16, but her last fight, a victory over Hiroko Yamanaka, was overturned after Cyborg tested positive for performance enhancing drugs.
Justino is the current Invicta FC featherweight champion. Her last fight at Invicta FC 15 was against Daria Ibragimova, who Cyborg finished with a KO in the first round, making it 3-in-a-row first round victories for her. Of her 15 wins, 13 have come in the form of a KO or TKO. With a record like that, it's no wonder why she is one of the most feared competitors in WMMA.
Cyborg's name has been tossed around a lot, usually with names like Rousey, Tate and Holm, but it's Smith who will step in the octagon for Cyborg's UFC debut.
Smith has competed mostly in the flyweight and bantamweight divisions, which are 125 pounds and 135 pounds respectively. She's 2 and 2 since her UFC debut back in 2014. Her last fight, at UFC Fight Night 85, was against Rin Nakai. Smith won that fight in a unanimous decision.
UFC 198 takes place on May 14 in Curitiba, Brazil at the Arena da Baixada which house 42,000 fans. The headlining event that night will be a heavyweight title fight between Fabricio Werdum and Stipe Miocic.
