Frankie Edgar and his team are less than enthused about the idea of a Nate Diaz/Conor McGregor rematch at UFC200. The number one featherweight contender looks set to sit on the sidelines once again, instead of getting his title shot last promised in December.
Conor McGregor announced himself to the world as the most devastating featherweight in the promotion when he knocked out former champ, Jose Aldo in 13 seconds. The night prior, Frankie Edgar knocked out Chad Mendes in the first round at "The Ultimate Fighter" setting up what looked like an obvious showdown between the duo.
However the fight was never meant to be, with McGregor opting instead to move into the lightweight division to take on Rafael Dos Anjos for the belt. When Dos Anjos injured his foot and was forced to pull out of the fight, McGregor again opted to go up in weight class to fight Nate Diaz at welterweight.
Ultimately, the Irishman was submitted in the second round which heralded calls for him to return to the featherweight division and give Edgar his shot or Aldo his rematch.
Neither look to be the fight that the UFC wants to make, and now with a rematch looming between Diaz and McGregor for UFC200, Frankie Edgar's manager has had enough and took to Instagram to call out both Conor McGregor and the promotion.
In a lengthy post, Ali Abdel-Aziz compared the two fighters and stated that history will not look kindly on the Irish fighter.
When history speaks for itself, Frankie Edgar will go down as the guy who fought anyone at any weight, any time, and anywhere. But when history speaks for @thenotoriousmma he was a ufc champion who hand picked his opponents and chose a guys out of shape to fight him and he ducked frankie. Every media member I talked to, a majority of the fans wants to see Edgar vs Mcgregor but Conor's coaches since he lost to Nate Diaz for every interview they talk about everyone else except for frankie.
Of course, Ali Abdel-Aziz didn't just lay the blame at the feet of McGregor. He also took aim at the UFC promotion for not booking the fight, even though it was seemingly promised to Edgar and the fight that the fans/media wanted.
At this point im blaming the @ufc for not making this fight happen because I think it's really up to them and they can make Conor fight frankie. Im done with this. It's been a miserable last 4 months talking and negotiating getting this fight to happen but now I realize the only person who needs to step up and say he wants to fight frankie is Conor. But I don't believe he wants to because he and everyone else knows that frankie would whoop his ass. I have 0 respect for a champion who ducks contenders and that's that.
Since his rise to the top of the featherweight division, Conor McGregor has always been vocal about his love of fighting and his 'anyone, anywhere, any place' attitude. Unfortunately Frankie Edgar and his team feel that 'the Answer' doesn't apply to that rule.
Edgar and his team have been campaigning for months now for the Notorious one to drop back down to the featherweight division and make a defence of his title or vacate the belt. Unfortunately, neither decision is up to them.
