Conor McGregor, in my opinion, has surpassed Ronda Rousey as the most important figure in the UFC, and on a even greater scale the entire world of Mixed Martial Arts.
One problem... boxer Floyd Mayweather has more money (and arguably more pop culture influence) than him, though.
This is something Conor McGregor is certainly aware of. But apparently McGregor is down to fight Mayweather to prove he is a better athlete, and by doing so, he is liable to pick up some serious endorsements, money from the fight, and the notoriety that would come with dethroning Floyd.
Now, McGregor has a lot of heart, but he's no boxer. This is what Floyd does all day every day. At first glance, this looks like an unfair bout.
But take a look at what McGregor had to say about a potential super fight between the two in an interview with Gareth A Davies on BT Sport:
“I’m open to discussions, come at me. But I hold the key and it’s me who holds the key to the fight game. I am open minded, I am open to discussion, I love competition, I love fighting. It would be nice to make that fight if the fans were interested and wanted to see it.”
It was then put to McGregor that any contest between the pair would be a “billion-dollar fight,” to which the Irishman, known as The Notorious, responded: “I’m all about those numbers, Gareth, so I would definitely do that, no problem.”
UFC featherweight champion McGregor takes on Nate Diaz on Saturday at UFC 196 in his first fight at welterweight.
What do you think?
Could Conor McGregor defeat Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match... or is he in over his head with this one?
