Fresh off the UFC fining Nate Diaz for wearing non-Reebok attire (jeans) at the UFC on Fox 17 weigh-in, we now have news that Rafael dos Anjos has been anointed the first champion to be fined by the promotion as well.
He too was fined at UFC on Fox 17 for breaking the Athlete Outfitting Policy which has been wreaking havoc on fighters who want to express themselves without conforming to the league's sponsorship requirements.
Dos Anjos was wearing an Evolve MMA shirt prior to hitting the scale for the weigh-in. It would make sense for him to wear this shirt since he trains part time at Evolve in Singapore, along with Kings MMA in Huntington Beach, CA.
The Evolve website lists dos Anjos as an instructor and says he has been a member since 2009. Dos Anjos and Evolve owner Chatri Sityodtong have a good relationship, and assuredly he would've been happy to see his top guy representing the brand.
Apparently, besides just dos Anjos and Diaz, Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone has been fined as well and was fined at UFC on Fox 17 too. When reached by MMA Fighting, dos Anjos' manager Ali Abdel-Aziz declined to comment.
UFC senior vice president of global consumer products Tracey Bleczinski told MMAjunkie last week that three fighters from UFC on FOX 17 were fined for "serious" infractions of the Athlete Outfitting Policy.
How much money are these guys making off Reebok?
Donald Cerrone lost in a first-round TKO to dos Anjos at UFC on Fox 17. UFC champions make $40,000 from the Reebok deal per fight. Challengers, like Cerrone, make $30,000.
