Paige VanZant has often had to shrug off comparisons to Ronda Rousey. She would much rather carve her own path, even though admittedly it's difficult not to see a little Ronda in her. Both blonde, good-looking, and tough fighters, the two have a lot of similarities.
However, Joanna Jedrejczyk thinks even though Paige VanZant was outclassed by Rose Namajunas at UFC Fight Night 80 on Thursday night, she showed immense toughness for nearly five rounds.
Here's what Jedrejczyk had to say about the fight during a media day on Saturday in Las Vegas.
"It was an amazing fight between Paige and Rose, and a difficult fight for Paige VanZant. So Rose did well. She didn’t fight that much after TUF but she showed that she’s game. And Paige VanZant, she’s still young, but she’s very talented and she’s a bad ass. She’s got the character. She still must learn a lot, but she’s a very good fight. In the future for sure she will become a UFC champion."
She also added that there is going to be a maturity period in the strawweight division. She thinks we'll see multiple greats emerge in a short period of time. That of course includes VanZant.
"The strawweight division is a pretty young division, but it’s growing up. The UFC is the best organization in the world, they sign the best fighters. We’ve got the best strawweight fighters in the world, and I’m just waiting on them."
It's always good to see veteran fighters supporting the youngsters. I hope she's right, because the sport would be lucky to have another marquee name in the mix!
