Ronda Rousey suffered defeat and lost her title in the process at the hands (and feet) of Holly Holm. Recently, UFC president Dana White announced that they're working on getting a rematch scheduled, but it appears Holly Holm and her camp would rather fight Miesha Tate in their first defense of the title.
Here's what Holm's manager, Lenny Fresquez, had to say about Holm's next move:
"I'm not sure Ronda will be ready for a July fight. She took a severe beating, and I don't think it's in her best interest to take the next fight so fast. They told me she's been ready and cleared, but ... "
He and Holm would rather get a July fight on the books with Miesha Tate, a former number one contender. She wants to get back in the Octagon soon, and her squad seems to be pretty set on the fact that she doesn't need much rest.
"Holly's used to staying active. We're from the old school, and we believe the No. 1 contender is there for a reason. ... [Tate] deserves a shot, but it's not for me to decide."
He added that she's a natural born fighter and doesn't care as much about the glitz, glamour, and specifically the money.
"Holly's not so much about the money as [much as thinking] she wants to fight. We'd like to fight Miesha. We understand there are risks, but Holly's a dominant champion, and she wants to fight the best. Right now, Miesha is the best."
I think this is good for the sport, in all honesty. Prior to Holly's KO of Ronda, Rousey was probably one of the only female fighters mainstream audiences had heard of. Now, we have more exposure for others with equal or similar levels of talent.
I would gladly watch Tate vs Holm and hope it happens ASAP.
