News broke that UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley would be facing Damian Maia at #UFC214 during the broadcast of UFC Tonight on Wednesday night. Maia is ranked number one in the division and it was only a matter of time before the fight was made official when Maia defeated Jorge Masvidal at UFC 211 last May. Whomever wins at UFC 214 could be in for a very high profile fight in the fall with Georges St-Pierre.
According to MMA Junkie, Dana White said that the winner of the fight between Maia and Woodley would be an ideal fight for St-Pierre to make his comeback.
St-Pierre was supposed to face Michael Bisping for the middleweight title upon his return to MMA, but the fight never materialized. It could have been a dangerous fight for him to take given the size difference and not having fought at that weight in the UFC. However, St-Pierre is regarded as the best welterweight to ever hold the title in the UFC and a return bout would likely bring in big numbers for the promotion.
Even though UFC 214 needs to happen first, given the timetable and the UFC having plans to return to Madison Square Garden again this November, a welterweight title fight featuring the return of Georges St-Pierre would make for a nice main event in "the world's most famous arena." St-Pierre last fought against Johny Hendricks in 2013, winning a split decision against the man that would win the title he vacated when he announced his retirement.
Will the four-year hiatus make a difference? Lets wait for UFC 214 to happen first before we get excited about this.
