Former UFC light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida is pursuing a new dream, and following in the footsteps of his beloved father.
Machida, along with his older brother Chinzo, is opening the Machida Karate Academy in Lomita, California.
Machida, in a recent interview, said that his father, Yoshizo Machida opened the very first Machida Academy in Belém, Brazil in 1981, and since then, has taught more than 10,000 students
"Everything that I know today is thanks to that Academy," said Machida, who called his father his "lifelong martial arts mentor."
"Now it is our turn to follow our family's legacy and continue this sacred family tradition," Machida said. "My father always used to say that adversities are beaten by persistence. Among other things, I want our students to learn persistence here."
In the video, Machida walks viewers through the Lomita building, explaining what students will learn.
Machida rose to the highest level in the UFC, winning the light heavyweight championship. He knocked out Rashad Evans to win the championship at UFC 98. Machida also holds victories over Dan Henderson, Randy Couture and Gegard Mousasi.
