The UFC visited Melbourne, Australia for the first time since Holly Holm knocked out Ronda Rousey at UFC 193, and while it wasn't the hard-hitting card we saw in 2015, the main event delivered.
Middleweight: Robert Whittaker def. Derek Brunson via TKO (round 1).
Brunson's wild swings and almost incomprehensible aggressiveness cost him a large amount of UFC records. Brunson has the second-longest win streak in the middleweight division behind Yoel Romero. He was on a four-fight knockout streak and was tied with Stipe Miocic for the longest active streak. His four-fight first round KO streak was the longest among active UFC fighters. He needed one more first round KO to tie Don Frye for the record, and it seems like that cost him.
Brunson was simply thinking about headhunting, and Whittaker caught him with some beautiful counters as Brunson dove in wildly.
Australia LOVED watching the New Zealander win.
To put this fight in perspective, Brunson finally paid for his chin up crimes:
But yeah, in general this was a crazy fight:
Lightweight: Andrew Holbrook def. Jake Matthews via split-decision.
Welterweight: Omari Akhmedov def. Kyle Noke via unanimous decision.
Lightweight: Alex Volkanovski def. Yusuke Kasuya via TKO (round 2).
Light Heavyweight: Tyson Pedro def. Khalil Rountree via rear-naked choke (round 1).
Strawweight: Danielle Taylor def. Seo Hee Ham via split decision.
Fox Sports 1 Prelims
Middleweight: Dan Kelly def. Chris Camozzi via unanimous decision.
Lightweight: Damien Brown def. Jon Tuck via split-decision.
Welterweight: Jonathan Meunier def. Richard Walsh via unanimous decision.
Flyweight: Ben Nguyen def. Geane Herrera via unanimous decision.
It was a decently fun fight, but when you start with a flying kick, it's hard to top.
Of course, that flying kick is much better like this:
