Champions broke the news that Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson was in the works for UFC 209 and now it seems that Nurmagomedov is endorsing that report by saying that he's already verbally agreed to the bout.
"The UFC asked me about this fight, March 4, UFC 209, and I said yes, I want to fight this," Nurmagomedov told RT Sport. (h/t MMAMania) "I want to take this fight. I want to fight with Tony and we, everybody, my team, are waiting for his answer."
According to Nurmagomedov, he is now waiting for Ferguson to agree to the terms.
"I think [Ferguson] is a real high level fight in the lightweight division right now," he said. "I think UFC before never made this kind of fight because nine win streak versus eight win streak, this has never happened before. I think this is a very big fight. Everybody wants to watch this fight and I want to take this fight."
Ferguson has said he'll fight Nurmagomedov, but wants a substantial raise.
Ferguson is on a nine-fight winning streak, with his most recent win over former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos. Nurmagomedov is undefeated in his eight fights in the UFC (and his career) and put on a show at UFC 205 when he defeated Michael Johnson while politely telling him to give up.
Nurmagomedov originally wanted a shot at Conor McGregor for the lightweight title, but since McGregor has announced an extended paternity leave, it leaves a bout with Ferguson (for a potential interim title) the most likely matchup.
The UFC has not commented about the matchup.
