There's no denying the heat that the #UFC209 main event welterweight title rematch between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson has been building over the past couple of months, with the former regularly taking both his opponent and the UFC to the woodshed over perceived mistreatment and the latter even engaging in a few head games of his own. But the co-main event between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov? It's just a WHOLE. NOTHA. LEVEL.
Both Nurmagomedov and Ferguson already declared their interim lightweight title fight to be the "real" and/or "people's" main event at yesterday's media event, and now, 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu founder, friend of Joe Rogan, noted conspiracy theorist, and T-Ferg's jiu-jitsu coach Eddie Bravo is here to add his two cents.
His two cents? Expect fireworks, y'all.
“It’s going to be the craziest fight ever,” Bravo said on the BJ Penn Radio Show.
“Tony Ferguson and Khabib? That should be the headliner right there. That’s like Tommy Hearns vs. [Marvin] Hagler. That’s so huge, it’s just going to be incredible. Khabib is a bear, but Tony is just super slick and ninja-like. It’s going to be one of the greatest fights of all time.”
For context, here is the infamous Hagler vs. Hearns match Bravo is referencing.
Watch it once, then again, then watch it 20 more times because it is arguably the greatest fight to ever take place inside a ring, cage, or the three-dimensional plane which defines human existence.
Though he wouldn't give an outright prediction for the fight ("I'm not a clairvoyant," said Bravo, pretty much contradicting the entire persona he has built over the years), he did warn us not to be surprised if/when Khabib fails to take Ferguson down and gets "knocked out standing."
Khabib not getting a takedown? That's it, Eddie, I'm taking the joint away.
