The UFC's #TonyFerguson is arguably one of the most feared lightweights in the world today, with a likely title shot imminent. That makes it a little surprising to hear that he has other things on his mind that are more important - such as a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.
According to Ferguson, who spoke to to Yahoo! Sports, he's less interested in a "tarnished" UFC title, and more interested in obtaining a coveted BJJ black belt from Eddie Bravo.
“If my concern was getting a shot at the belt as soon as possible, I’d probably be [angry],” he said. “I’m more interested in receiving my black belt from Eddie Bravo’s 10th Planet jiu-jitsu system than the UFC belt right now. The belt is tarnished, man. I feel like the belt has been in so many different hands, it’s so polluted. It needs to be recycled by the time I get there."
Ferguson is of course referring to the upcoming title shot given to UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor over a lightweight contender. But he says that's ok, it's not a priority for him any longer.
“I think everybody wants me to get the title, but for me, I don’t do what everybody else wants me to do," he said. "I’m a leader, not a follower, man."
He is currently on an eight-fight win streak and claimed performance bonuses in each of his last four bouts. Six of his last eight wins came by way of finish - five by submission.
