A few years ago, a fight between Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva was thought to be inevitable, but after both Sonnen and Silva experienced issues with USADA, the UFC's anti-doping program sentinels, it seemed almost impossible that this fight was going to come to fruition. Now that both Sonnen and Silva are signed to Bellator, it's very likely that they'll meet inside the cage.
Below is a video of Sonnen's post fight interview at UFC Fight Night 26, where he called out Silva after submitting his long-time training partner, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.
The Sonnen-Silva rivalry brewed during the filming of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil Season three, as they both served as coaches of opposing teams. During the show, which aired in early 2014, there was a lot of bad blood between Sonnen and Silva, and it even turned into a brawl at one point during the season.
After TUF, Sonnen and Silva were scheduled to fight at UFC 175 in July 2014, but the fight was cancelled when Silva refused to go under random drug testing. Sonnen was then scheduled to fight Vitor Belfort, but he subsequently failed his random drug test and was removed from the bout. Soon after, Sonnen announced his retirement from MMA competition.
Today, both Sonnen and Silva are active fighters signed to Bellator. Silva came out of retirement in May and signed to the promotion in a multi-fight deal. The "Axe Murderer" is currently scheduled to fight in a 16-man open weight tournament for Rizin, a Japanese MMA promotion that has a partnership with Bellator. That tournament will unfold from September to December.
Meanwhile, Sonnen teased of coming out of retirement in August, and last week the Associated Press announced that Sonnen was signing with Bellator. Chael currently has no fight scheduled, but it's rumored that he could be facing former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz later this year.
