I'm a sucker for promo packages. When I see a good one, I end up watching it multiple times for years. The job of the promo is to tell you about a match, and make you interested in it.
A good promo package can tell you everything you need to know about a rivalry in a matter of a minutes. It's the perfect way to condense months or years of feuding in an emotional way. With that said, here are my top five favorite #WrestleMania promo packages.
5) Hulk Hogan vs Vince McMahon (WrestleMania XIX)
One of the least remembered WrestleMania matches. I remember this promo video more than I remember the match itself. I always felt that this was an incredibly emotional promo. You could feel 20 years of animosity from just watching this. Instead of telling you that this is "A Match 20 Years in the Making", this video shows it you. I love when a person is rewarded for being a long-term fan, and that's what this promo does. The inclusion of clips from the 80s, 90s, and #WCW make everything feel real & rewarding.
4) Daniel Bryan vs HHH (WrestleMania XXX)
The perfect way to summarize a wrestler's rise to super-stardom in four minutes. I don't think a promo package has ever captured the transformation of a superstar the way this one did. If you weren't a fan of #DanielBryan, you were going to be one after watching this.
The combination of the music and retrospective shots in this are perfect. From an editing standpoint, this is probably the best edited video #WWE has ever made.
3) The Rock vs Stone Cold (WrestleMania XIX)
"It's not about titles, it's not about money." JR's words get me jacked up every time I hear them. You got the feeling that this was the last and final match between #TheRock and #StoneCold. Both of these guys were in the latter stages of their careers and had done it all. We got to see their history, their hostility and what happened in their previous WrestleMania matches. This promo made you feel like you were watching something historic, a grand encounter.
The Rock vs Stone Cold is perhaps the greatest rivalry of all time, and this video let you know it.
2) Shawn Michaels vs Undertaker (WrestleMania 26)
This promo made me believe HBK was legitimately retiring. Wrestlers "retire" so often, but the emotion in this video made it seem like a sincere gesture. The song choice in this video was perfect, the lyrics fit the storyline and emotions spot on. You could feel Shawn Michael's desperation in his attempt to defeat the #Undertaker at WrestleMania.
This wasn't about HBK and Undertaker's storied legacy. It wasn't about giving us a run through of their careers. It was about one thing, Shawn Michael's one-year obsession with beating Undertaker at WrestleMania.
1) The Rock vs Stone Cold (WrestleMania X-Seven)
No band ruled the WWE like Limp Bizkit did in the early 2000s. To this day, the only reason I remember Limp Bizkit is because of their WWE promo packages. This was the perfect song choice to illustrate the hostility between The Rock and Stone Cold. It wasn't about telling you their backstory nor their previous WrestleMania encounters. It didn't try to annoyingly spell things out for you like WWE does so many times today. You don't need to tell me that I'm witnessing history, just show me.
This was the story the promo told: The Rock and Stone Cold are in a match together for the WWE Championship, get excited.
Honorable Mention: Bret Hart vs Vince McMahon (WrestleMania 26)
A promo that was infinite times better than its match. What made it amazing is because the emotions were real, you could feel the 13 years of angst #BretHart felt. The song choice of "Civil Twilight" only amplified those feelings. I would say that this is probably the most emotional promo video WWE has ever made.
