Some #WWE fans feel this year's WrestleMania 33 card is devoid of a marquee match. Sure, Goldberg and #BrockLesnar are headlining the event, but their match isn't expected to go much longer than five minutes. Fans support WrestleMania for the spectacle, but they leave fulfilled because of the excellent product in the ring.
The company has the talent on the roster to put on high-quality matches, but the booking sees a talent like A.J. Styles taking on Shane McMahon, which is a gross misuse of arguably the best wrestler on the planet. Shane O'Mac is a marquee name, but their match has limits due to his lack of true wrestling pedigree.
That is why finding out that the Styles match was originally offered to Shawn Michaels has an added sting.
Michaels was on the Sam Roberts podcast and admitted that the WWE offered him the chance to face Styles at WrestleMania 33, but passed on the opportunity.
“I guess I’m breaking something with you and I don’t even know if I should, but I could have had that match,” said Michaels. “They didn’t have an opponent for A.J. at WrestleMania. I said that I hadn’t been asked because I hadn’t, but then I was.
“I said, I wish that young man was here 10 years ago, man. I honestly do. I think he’s very talented.”
As previously stated, Styles has been considered the best wrestler for a few years now, and Michaels is arguably the greatest performer of all-time. It's likely a match fans would've found electric, but no one can fault Michaels giving his body some rest.
