A fight between UFC lightweight contenders Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov is reportedly in the works for March 2017 in Las Vegas, according to Anthony Gonzalez, a coach from Ferguson's camp who spoke to Champions exclusively.
The bout would likely be for the interim title as current lightweight champion Conor McGregor is on a break awaiting the birth of his first child.
#UFC209 is scheduled for March 4 in Las Vegas, which would be the likely fight card if things go according to plan.
"Tony and Khabib are the two biggest threats to Conor," Gonzalez said. "And [the UFC] doesn't even know if he's going to defend the belt when he comes back."
Ferguson is coming off one the biggest wins of his career after defeating former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night Mexico City — making it his ninth win in a row. He is currently ranked number two in the division.
Nurmagomedov is undefeated in his pro career, including eight UFC wins. He's ranked first in the division and put on a phenomenal show at #UFC205 when he defeated Michael Johnson while also politely explaining to his opponent that he needed to win so he could fight for the title next.
A matchup between Ferguson and Nurmagomedov has been scheduled multiple times before, but due to injuries, were cancelled each time.
