It's been months in the making, but it looks like we finally have the date set for the biggest combat sports event of all time Mayweather vs. McGregor.
According to a report published earlier today by respected boxing journalist Kevin Iole, #ConorMcGregor vs. #FloydMayweather will take place on August 26 at either the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Iole reported that a "well-placed source" informed Yahoo Sports of the impending announcement on Wednesday and that the Mayweather camp are expected to announce the bout later today.
The report failed to mention terms of the deal or an exact location for the fight, but earlier on Wednesday the Nevada State Athletic Commission approved the request from Mayweather promotions to host a card at the MGM Grand. T-Mobile Arena is currently booked for Ice Cube's Big 3 championship game.
Having acquired a license for the event, changing the venue will be no issue, thus it's highly likely that the event will shift to the larger 20,000 capacity T-Mobile Arena in the near future.
Mayweather, who will be coming out of retirement in a bid to extend his unbeaten professional boxing record to 50-0, will be taking on a man who has never competed in a professional boxing match.
McGregor is the current UFC Lightweight champion and last fought at #UFC205 when he defeated Eddie Alvarez for the 155-pounds. Immediately after the fight, the Irishman set his sights on Mayweather and it looks like he's finally got his date with destiny.
The Irishman took to his Instagram to announce the fight with a little jab at his opponent.
We will update our report following the official announcement.
Update: Floyd Mayweather Jr. has also confirmed the match-up:
