Recently, speaking exclusively to Newstalk.com, a spokesperson for the Spanish club said they would “be glad if we could make a UFC event; our stadium can hold more than 80,000 fans.” However, there is a small catch.
The spokesperson for Real Madrid said that the event would have to be hosted sometime between May and July, as that's the off-season time for the professional football team. It was also stated that they would require a reasonable timeframe to plan in advance.
There is no doubt that McGregor is one of the biggest, if not the biggest draw in MMA, as he set the UFC pay-per-view record this past August at UFC 202. He also has the potential to break his own record at UFC 205 on November 12. If someone were to fill 80,000 seats at the Santiago Bernabeu, it would have to be McGregor.
Although the stars aren't aligned for McGregor to fight at the Bernabeu, there are a few factors that help the situation:
- The UFC has interest in growing in the European market, and has shown that they can sell out an arena in Europe (Michael Bisping and Dan Henderson sold out the Manchester Arena in just six minutes at UFC 204)
- The UFC has three European champions in Michael Bisping, Conor McGregor and Joanna Jędrzejczyk
- Following his $75,000 fine by the NAC for the UFC 202 presser incident with Nate Diaz, McGregor told Rolling Stone that he doesn't see himself fighting in Nevada in the "foreseeable future"
- Real Madrid's poster boy, #CristianoRonaldo, is a fan of McGregor
With that being said, it's not crazy to think that we could see the Irishman fighting in Spain.
McGregor is currently scheduled to fight lightweight champion, #EddieAlvarez at #UFC205 in a champion vs. champion superfight. If McGregor defeats Alvarez, the Irishman would be the first person in UFC history to hold two belts in different weight classes at the same time.
UFC 205 is set to take place in New York City on November 12. This card features three title fights, as McGregor fights Alvarez, welterweight champ Tyron Woodley takes on Stephen Thompson, and strawweight champ Joanna Jędrzejczyk fights Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
