Since joining #Bellator in 2016, former #UFC light heavyweight contender Phil Davis has gone undefeated in impressive wins by submitting former champ Emmanuel Newton, knocking out Francis Carmont, and taking a decision from King Mo. No one is denying Mr. Wonderful's bid at Bellator's light heavyweight title, and tonight he smothered the champ Liam McGeary.
Phil Davis is the new Bellator light heavyweight champion.
The undefeated McGeary (11-0) has been damn impressive in his Bellator run, but injuries have kept him out of the cage for over a year until tonight at Bellator 163, where he was simply outclassed by Phil Davis.
McGeary's length was causing problems for Davis early, but a beautiful left hook shook McGeary and Davis took him down with his superlative wrestling. While McGeary looked good at times, but the ring rust was real. Every time the champ threw, Davis countered with a leg digging leg kick or plowed through the champ for the takedown.
It's not like McGeary didn't try — he landed knees to Davis' body as he closed the distance, and even tried working submissions off his back, but Davis was too much. Every time McGeary tried for a submission, Davis would elbow him in the head, knee his body or flatten him out with his heavy hips.
Tonight, wrestling > jiu jitsu.
By the end of the 4th, McGeary was bleeding, barely escaping from Davis' threats of the submission. This was pretty much the last 15 minutes of the fight:
Grats to Phil Davis on his first major title. Can anyone in Bellator beat this guy?
