Paul Daley has a long history of difficult weight cuts, and now the 33-year-old power puncher has reinforced his reputation by being pulled from Bellator 163. For fans of the British fighter, this comes as a heavy blow. Almost as heavy as one of his punches. One of the main reasons we were tuning into tonight's show was to see Daley do his thing.
Bellator president Scott Coker explained why Daley was pulled to MMA Fighting:
"After a difficult weight cut, we, along with Mike Mazzulli from the Mohegan Athletic Commission, made the decision to pull Paul Daley from tonight's event as a precautionary measure. Fighter safety is of the utmost importance to us here at Bellator."
According to Bellator, Daley was weighing-in at 171 Thursday night, but was unable to rehydrate.
It's always better to be safe than sorry, but Daley has missed weight 4 times since his UFC days, and has had multiple close calls. At 5'9', Daley is too small for middleweight (even though he could probably knock out a heavyweight), but it's likely getting harder for him to make the cut as he ages.
This is a massive bummer. Hopefully, Bellator can reschedule Daley soon, as long as he's healthy.
Let's watch some highlights to feel better.
