In the world of combat sports, every knockout is truly its own, unique, unconsciousness-inducing snowflake. From time to time, however, we are gifted a KO that truly defies the odds, our expectations, or even the common laws of physics. That's what the 'Insane KO of the Day' is all about.
Today's KO: Left Hook Hospital, Soccer Kick Cemetery
There is an unspoken rule in fighting that the "face down, ass up" position is one that should be avoided at all costs. It's not one you will be taught in a beginner's jiu jitsu class or even one you'll find in the Unified Rules of MMA, but generally speaking, there are very few scenarios in which such a position could serve you any possible strategic advantages. And that's not even taking into account the somewhat degrading nature of the position itself.
When you're competing in one of the only remaining MMA promotions in the world that allows kicks to the head of a grounded opponent, this rule is emphasized tenfold. I know, this should sound obvious, but if it was, then could any of you explain why Thailand's Saifol Merican voluntarily placed himself in that exact position during his One Championship 38 bout with Geje Eustaquio?
Could it be that Merican's physical being had no say in the matter after his spiritual one was eradicated with that picture perfect left hook which came milliseconds before? Possibly, but all I know is that he didn't do himself any favors by plopping into the ol' FDAU on his way down to the canvas. That's like, primo real estate for soccer kicking, you guys. Beautiful real estate. The best real estate. Could you even blame Eustaquio for opting to follow-up with a probably-unnecessary-but-completely-legal-and-totally-awesome soccer kick? Merican did everything but place his head on a golf tee.
Pro tip: AVOID THE FDAU.
