In the world of combat sports, every knockout is truly its own, unique, unconsciousness-inducing snowflake. From time to time, however, we are gifted a KO that truly defies the odds, our expectations, or even the common laws of physics. That's what the 'Insane KO of the Day' is all about.
Today's KO: Holly Holm Gets MurderDeathKilled By Anne Sophie Mathis
No stranger to being on the winning side of the Insane KO of the Day, former UFC women's bantamweight champ Holly Holm has been sending her opponents into the shadow realms dating all the way back to 2002, when she kickstarted her boxing career with four straight wins.
Seven years later, Holm was a bonafide lady stud (studess?) in the squared circle, having captured IBA Female Light Welterweight and WBAN Junior Welterweight titles (among many others) and compiled 30 wins alongside just one loss. But as she would learn on the night that she shocked the world against Ronda Rousey, even the mightiest among us must fall from time to time.
And when challenging Anne Sophie Mathis for the vacant IBA Female & WBAN Welterweight titles in 2011, fall Holm did. Multiple times. Through the ropes. And get stuck in them like a broken marionette doll which had been gifted life but was only just learning how to walk like a normal human woman. It was honestly one of the most unnecessary beatdowns you'll ever see -- an MDK that would have made Simon Phoenix cringe -- and a testament to Holm's resolve in that she was not only able to recover from it, but defeat Mathis in their rematch the following year.
