Miguel Torres isn't just a former bantamweight world champion and one of the best fighters, pound-for-pound in MMA history - he's also a thoughtful human being, father, and martial arts coach. If you haven't already, be sure to follow him on social media, especially at his verified Facebook page.
Once you do, you'll be among the first to see some of Torres' comical as well as profound posts. For example, on Sunday, Torres took to his keyboard and wrote out a brief treatise on the illusory value of race and ethnicity.
The American whose family traces its roots to Mexico remembered being rejected as an American by white neighbors as well as being rejected as a Mexican by Mexicans when visiting the nation during family vacations. It wasn't until he got some notoriety that Torres began to be accepted by different groups.
Before any ethnicity or race groups, #MiguelTorres described how he now sees himself first and foremost as a father, teacher, college graduate, martial artist and business owner. "Never judge a man because of where he was born or the color of his skin," he wrote.
"Or, the language he speaks or the god he prays to, or the way he heats up his tortillas...judge a man on the content of his character and by his actions."
Amen, brother Miguel.
