John "Sexy Mexy" Castaneda missed weight ahead of his Combate Americas bantamweight title fight with Gustavo Lopez on Thursday night. Due to this, the title will only be awarded to Lopez if he wins.
Castaneda weighed in at 137.5 pounds for his bout with Lopez, who hit the scales at 135 on the dot. Castaneda stepped up to the scale and immediately asked for a towel.
This was meant to be the first championship fight for Combate Americas.
As this is a title fight, Castaneda was not allowed the one-pound allowance, but was given until the scale was removed (one hour) to cut the remaining weight.
"It's unprofessional for a champion to miss weight," Lopez said to Champions.co shortly after the weigh-in concluded. "It just shows he isn't taking this seriously."
He will likely be fined a percentage of his purse, but at press time, the amount was not known. If Castaneda wins the fight he will not be awarded the belt and the title will remain vacant according to Combate Americas Vice President Mike Afromowitz.
This is the first time Castaneda has missed weight while fighting for the promotion.
Combate Americas "Empire Rising" will air live on UFC Fight Pass tomorrow evening.
