When a character's claim to fame involves terrorizing teenagers in the woods or fighting off the undead, it's probably a good idea not to cross them.
Since its inception, the horror genre has been filled with villains and heroes who've never shied away from dealing out bloody beatdowns on the big screen. While some have given audiences nightmares for decades as the ghoulish foes who go bump in the night, others have left their mark by facing the underworld head on in more heroic roles.
From Freddy Krueger to Ash from #EvilDead, here are five horror icons you definitely shouldn't pick a fight with.
First appearance: The #TexasChainSawMassacre (1974)
Latest appearance: Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)
Why you shouldn't fight him: The chainsaw-wielding psychopath from the acclaimed horror franchise is one of the genre's most blood-thirsty characters. Few have taken on #Leatherface and lived to tell the tale, which is why it's best to avoid this cannibal at all costs. The iconic villain is set to return to theaters in the upcoming Leatherface prequel due out in 2017.
4. Jason Voorhees
First appearance: Friday the 13th (1980)
Latest appearance: Friday the 13th (2009)
Why you shouldn't fight him: The machete-swinging terrorizer of sex-crazed campers has shed a lot of blood in his myriad of movies over the years. Jason has fought everyone from Freddy Krueger to astronauts in the future, so he's got a lot of experience causing death and mayhem for all sorts of unsuspecting citizens. The mask-wearing killer is set to return to theaters with a reboot film, which appropriately premieres on Friday, October 13, 2017.
3. Michael Myers
First appearance: Halloween (1978)
Latest appearance: Halloween II (2009)
Why you shouldn't fight him: John Carpenter's seemingly unkillable slasher isn't the flashiest horror icon on the list, but boy is he a brutal, murdering machine. Michael Meyers always shows up at the worst time, and no matter how hard his victims try, there's just no way a normal human can take him in a fight.
2. Freddy Krueger
First appearance: A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Latest appearance: A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
Why you shouldn't fight him: The master of nightmares is by far the most powerful supernatural figure on the list. Between his ability to kill people in their dreams and his razor sharp knife-claws that would give #Wolverine a run for his money, Freddy Kreuger is one of the most fearsome foes in horror history.
1. Ash Williams
First appearance: The Evil Dead (1981)
Latest appearance: Ash vs Evil Dead (2015)
Why you shouldn't fight him: The Number 1 spot goes to the fan-favorite, undead slaying character made popular by Bruce Campbell. Not only is he dangerous with a gun, he also has a chainsaw arm that he's not afraid to unleash on his enemies. As the only hero in the roundup, Ash is one of the few human characters in film who could feasibly take on and actually beat all the other horror icons on the list.
