A new team of vigilantes will join the Emerald Archer when he returns to Star City for the upcoming season of Arrow. One of the recruits who's suiting up to help out the Green Arrow this year is tech genius and world-class athlete, Mr. Terrific, played by actor, Echo Kellum. Ahead, the latest member of Team Arrow dishes on getting into shape for the role, mastering the salmon ladder, and more.
Has the role become more physical for you since Mr. Terrific joined Team Arrow full time for season 5?
It is definitely, definitely more intense, as far as the physicality, for sure. I've gotten bruises and all types of bumps and stuff. I think people are really going to love it. I think people are really going to enjoy seeing the journey that Curtis goes on.
Since Mr. Terrific is a former Olympian, the training process must have been intense. How did you prepare for the role?
Right now, I'm training in fighting, MMA, Muay Thai, boxing and stuff like that; also [do] free weights and all types of cardio stuff. So, I get to go to the gym. That's something I love, getting to the gym and working out.
The trailer for the new season showed your character having trouble with the salmon ladder. Has Green Arrow, aka Stephen Amell, taught you how to master the workout yet?
Stephen Amell definitely gives us all tips on how to get that salmon ladder down. Curtis will definitely progress from that point.
Mr. Terrific and a bunch of heroes will join Team Arrow this season. How will your character interact with the new group of vigilantes?
It's really cool to see how I can kind of be what Emily [Bett Rickards] kind of did with me last year. Like, I can welcome them in and some of them, we have a lot of fun with that.
Between his tech savvy smarts and Olympic-level skills as an athlete, is Mr. Terrific the ultimate geek superhero, considering he has both the brains and the brawn?
Yeah, definitely! That's what you want. You want brains and brawn. He is one of the smartest people in the world and can still kick ass. That's a great combo. Imagine if Lex Luthor had superpowers. He'd be pretty formidable.
You recently worked with Bob Odenkirk on a movie for Netflix. How was that experience and should we ever expect an Arrow-Better Call Saul crossover?
[laughs] I would love an Arrow-Better Call Saul crossover. Bob Odenkirk is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. He's also a comedic genius. He's such a great artist and such a great actor. He gets it. He really gets it, and has a love for this industry and appreciation for it.
Arrow season 5 premieres on CW Wednesday, October 5, at 8 p.m.
