The wait is finally over! Only instead of a date for the highly anticipated matchup between UFC middleweight champion #MichaelBisping and former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, we now know that the fight is off — at least according to UFC president Dana White.
“I made this GSP fight; we did a press conference. The thing was supposed to happen in July. Michael Bisping is going to have to defend his title now. We’re not waiting for GSP,” he said to FOX Sports Australia.
#GSP was set to make his return to the Octagon after a lengthy layoff, with the UFC even announcing the bout with a date that was to be determined, but after St-Pierre said he wouldn't be ready to fight for months, the promotion decided to move on.
“So, we’re not waiting for Georges St-Pierre anymore. We’re moving on with the division, and Yoel Romero will get the next shot.”
Bisping said earlier tonight that he would wait for St-Pierre, though it appears that the UFC is not in on the same page.
White says that instead of GSP, they will extend the next title shot to #YoelRomero, who many thought deserved it ahead of St-Pierre.
“(Yoel) doesn’t need to voice his opinion on why he needs a title shot. He definitely deserves a title shot. He’s next in line; he’s the No.1 ranked guy in the world," he said. “Georges St-Pierre was coming back. Bisping-St Pierre - they both wanted that fight. We asked Yoel to step aside, he did. It doesn’t look like that fight is gonna happen now."
