Conor McGregor may be the headliner for the highly-anticipated #UFC205 card, but he isn't the only fighter with karate skills who's throwing down inside the Octagon this weekend.
Southpaw Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson will get a chance to show off his arsenal of traditional martial arts moves when he challenges champion Tyron Woodley for the UFC welterweight title. Since the 33-year-old challenger is known for his funky techniques, perhaps we'll see a crane kick or two on Saturday night.
Seeing as how Thompson has become the #KarateKid of the UFC, we thought it'd be fun to cast the iconic martial arts movie with a few names who're scheduled to serve up beatdowns at UFC 205.
Here is a list of fighters whom we think would make for perfect casting choices in the Karate Kid.
Stephen Thompson as Daniel Larusso
In this fantasy scenario, obviously "Wonderboy" has to be Daniel Larusso. Sure, Thompson is way more of a karate veteran than a rookie like Daniel-san, but one thing that they do have in common is a penchant for pulling off insane moves inside the ring. If that wasn't enough, the UFC welterweight has even been on the receiving end of a "sweep the leg" style move.
Donald Cerrone as John Kreese
A trash-talking, martial arts master who leads up a group of dedicated students and wears ridiculous outfits? That could either be John Kreese, the villainous leader of the Cobra Kai, or Donald Cerrone, the cowboy hat-wearing UFC star and leader of the BMF Ranch training facility. Take your pick.
Conor McGregor as Johnny Lawrence
A brash and confident fighter who likes to get under his opponent's skin, Conor McGregor is pretty solid choice to play Johnny Lawrence. Not only does "Notorious" think he's the best around, but he also has the karate skills to back up his trash talk. Well, most of the time.
Eddie Alvarez as Mr. Miyagi
UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez may not be the oldest fighter on the card, but you'll be hard-pressed to find one with more cage experience. Like Mr. Miyagi, an elder statesman like Alvarez could teach the whole promotion a few fight lessons.
Joanna Jędrzejczyk as Ali Millls
Since neither woman takes crap from anyone, UFC strawweight champ Joanna Jędrzejczyk and Daniel-san's love interest Ali Mills probably could've been BFFs in some strange, alternate reality. However, unlike Ali, Joanna doesn't need a man to serve up a few ass-kickings.
Tim Kennedy as Dutch
Another vocal and brutish Cobra Kai member, Dutch needs to be played by a guy who isn't afraid to speak his mind, which is why Tim Kennedy is a top casting choice. Hopefully there's still a way for Kennedy to perform on Saturday night despite the card's loss of Rashad Evans.
Chris Weidman as Bobby Brown
Although he ends up hurting Daniel-san in the flick, Bobby Brown is probably the least awful Cobra Kai member. Between being a generally nice guy and handing out leg injuries, there's really no one else on the card who can play him except Chris Weidman.
