It’s holiday week here at the Bisping home, and things are finally starting to pull together after weeks and weeks of construction for my house remodel. My family got here a few days ago, but I’m putting them up in a hotel because the house isn’t quite finished enough for them to stay here just yet.
The company doing the remodel, Quality Environmental, is doing a fantastic job doing the refurb. It wasn’t the plan, but once we started doing this and that, we said, ‘Screw it, we might as well do everything,’ so now we’re doing a complete remodel—everything. It’s almost done and looks incredible, so I want to give the guys at Quality Environmental a big thank you for making everything look so amazing.
That said, it’s still very, very stressful with three kids, living in the building site and Christmas around the corner. They’re almost finished, but that’s my fault because we kept adding work as we were going along. The best part about it will be the floors.
Now I know what you’re all thinking, ‘Mike, why are the floors such a big deal?’ Well, we had beautiful hardwood flooring put in three years ago, but it was super dark, and it just shows every bloody mark and dog hair and crumb.
My poor wife cleans up constantly. It’s a never ending chore for her. She walks the floor in the morning and in the afternoon, cleaning as she goes, and it still gets dirty 10 minutes later. She said, ‘Please can we redo the floor,’ so I said ‘Screw it,” and now we’ve got lighter flooring that hides the sins very well.
It’s coming along nicely, and while not completely finished, we are far enough along to be able to have Christmas festivities here at the homestead. We’ve got the tree up and the furniture back in place, and the kitchen is back in order, so we’ll be cooking the holiday feast and eating at our new table.
My mum, God bless her, but she can burn water. Everything that I ate when I was a kid was burned, but she said that’s how it was supposed to be. That was her answer for everything, ‘That’s how it’s supposed to be.’ This year? Yes, my mum will be cooking again, but I will help. We’ll be having Yorkshire pudding and all the standard Christmas fare.
We don’t really have a lot of “Christmas traditions.” We don’t go caroling (can you imagine me singing?!?!) or set out the nativity scene, but we do play some board games on Christmas Eve with some cheese and wine for a nice, mellow evening.
I did get a nice, early Christmas present when Rolling Stone and FOX Sports voted me Fighter of the Year. I consider it an honor and a privilege, especially considering all the great fighters out there these days. 2016 has been a wonderful year for me—I beat Anderson Silva, I won the belt and I got revenge against Dan Henderson.
Things have been really good outside the Octagon, as well. Thanks to all of you for the support, and thanks to my family for always backing me and sticking with me through all my tantrums. And to those fighters lining up for a crack at me, I wish you all happy holidays and good health. I’d say something snappy here, but in the spirit of Christmas, I’m going to keep things positive.
From my family to yours, Happy Holidays!
