It’s been a long time coming, but it appears that will step back into the ONE Championship cage to defend his ONE welterweight world title.

Sources close to have informed us that a bout between Askren and Malaysia’s Agilan Thani is in the works for ONE: Dynasty of Heroes on May 26.

Askren is unbeaten as a professional with fifteen wins, no losses and one no contest. He won the ONE welterweight championship back in August 2014 and last fought at ONE: Global Warriors in April 2016, when he successfully defended his title against Russian fighter, Nikolai Aleksakhin.

The former Bellator champion has since found it difficult to stay active with fight cancellations and a lack of willing opponents ready to challenge him. Thani, however, appears to be the one man willing to take him on and he's been actively pursing the bout on social media for the past few weeks.

Thani is also unbeaten as professional with a record of 6-0. The Malaysian made his ONE debut back in March 2015 when he defeated Indonesian fighter Reant Febriza Rainir via TKO at ONE: Age of Champions. Since then, he’s gone on to record wins against the likes of James Kouame, Brad Robinson and Jeff Huang last February.

The bout between Askren and Thani is yet to be made official, but should everything go to plan, Askren vs Thani will join what is fast becoming a stacked fight card on May 26 in Singapore.

ONE officials announced the event last month with the news that ONE atomweight world champion Angela Lee would be defending her title for the second time against Brazilian, Istela Nunes. News followed shortly after that a grappling match between Garry Tonon and Shinya Aoki would also be on the bill on May 26 which will stream live in the US on FloCombat.

ONE Championship certainly aren’t messing around when it comes to putting together a fight card to rival the UFC, who will be visiting Singapore just three weeks later on June 17 for UFC Fight Night 111.
