#AndersonSilva was once one of the most feared MMA fighters on the planet. Today, he's a jokester and a man interested in having glorified exhibitions.
Silva has made it quite clear that he's not in the sport for titles or money, but instead for fun fights that'll boost his legacy. Potential fights with Luke Rockhold, Vitor Belfort and Uriah Hall were all shot down by The Spider.
“I’m coming off a win,” said Silva at the UFC 212 news conference. “I hadn’t won a fight in a long time, so there’s not really a point in fighting either one of those because they’re coming off a loss. It doesn’t make sense. It’s not going to take me any further, so it makes no sense.
“I’m ready to fight whoever the UFC puts in front of me – whoever it may be. I hope the UFC puts an athlete coming off a win that’s going to bring something to my legacy, otherwise it makes no sense.”
Many would argue that Silva's legacy was ruined when he popped for a banned substance after his defeat of #NickDiaz at UFC 183. His back-to-back losses to Chris Weidman prior to that don't help either.
That's why it's hard to believe Silva is after improving his legacy when he's entertaining fighters like Uriah Hall and Kelvin Gastelum. No disrespect to either fighter, but they don't really move the needle in terms of major career accomplishments.
There are fights that do help Silva's legacy available, but by all accounts, he wants nothing to do with those.
Silva instead called out UFC middleweight champion #MichaelBisping and Stockton bad boy Nick Diaz for rematches.
“It’s something that’s been talked about,” said Silva. “It’s possible that it could happen, the fight against Nick. I respect him a lot. I think he’s an excellent fighter. It’s a fight that would be interesting, a fight that would be pretty cool to watch, and it actually makes sense. It was a no contest, so let’s see. Anything can happen.”
His UFC 183 fight against Nick Diaz was far from entertaining and aside from his near-KO of Bisping, neither was their matchup.
Accepting a fight with Romero, Rockhold or Mousasi would be refreshing for fans and truly test his skill level. His suggested options are certain to draw criticism considering that he's an all-time great.
