Jean-Claude Van Damme has karate-kicked his way into becoming a TV star. The martial arts movie legend's new action comedy series, Jean-Claude Van Johnson, has been given the green light by Amazon Studios after a successful pilot season run. The show will join fellow newcomers, The Tick and I Love Dick as a part of the slate of shows set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video in 2017.
Van Damme thanked fans on Twitter for voting for Jean-Claude Van Johnson during its pilot test period.
If you haven't watched the first episode yet, the show revolves around a fictionalized version of Van Damme, who is also a retired undercover agent known to the intelligence community as "Johnson." Hilarity ensues when he decides to leave the acting world to return to his life of danger following a run-in with an old lover.
In addition to showing off the action icon's comedy and judo chops, the pilot for Jean-Claude Van Johnson featured performances by Kat Foster, Moises Arias, and Creed star, Phylicia Rashad.
Van Damme also served as an executive producer on the series along with director Peter Antecio of Key and Peele fame, legendary filmmaker, Ridley Scott, and David W. Zucker, who worked on Amazon's hit original series, The Man in the High Castle. Mortal Kombat's Dave Callaham created the show and wrote the pilot, which was directed by Atencio.
