Fighting is often referred to as poetry in motion, then MMA is Rock N Roll in a guillotine.
As we approach UFC 208, Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie will attempt to become the first UFC Women’s featherweight champion. Every great movie needs a soundtrack and all great fights should have a playlist.
Allow us to paint the narrative behind the UFC 208 main event through song and allow some of the music’s most popular artist to give you a better understanding of the competitors.
A-Side Holly Holm
1. Lynyrd Skynyrd – Preacher’s Daughter
Holly Holm is the daughter of a New Mexico preacher but doesn't let that blind you, she is all about fighting. Holm began boxing professionally in 2002 and held light welterweight, welterweight and middleweight titles during her 12-year boxing career.
2. Richmond – Feels Like Home (New Mexico True)
Holly Holm has had the luxury of having one of the best gyms, Jackson-Wink MMA Academy, in her hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. There’s never been a need to leave home for training, and that loyalty has paid off in the form of multiple boxing titles and the UFC women's bantamweight title.
3. Cyndi Lauper – Change of Heart
In 2013, Holly Holm decided that it was time for a change and left boxing for MMA despite being WBF, IBF & WBAN female welterweight champion. Holly decided to make MMA a full-time pursuit after KOing Katie Merrill in her Bellator MMA debut.
4. Kevin Rudolph – Champions
Holly Holm’s UFC career was fast-tracked and after just two fights she was awarded a shot at larger than life Ronda Rousey at UFC 193. What ensued was one of the most shocking KOs in MMA history and the crowing of Holly Holm the champion.
5. Kanye West – All Falls Down
After losing her title to Miesha Tate at UFC 196 without a successful defense and losing her follow-up fight to bantamweight Valentina Shevchenko, Holm will now try her hand in the featherweight division. She’ll need to do heavy self-evaluation and find the motivation she had before the Rousey fight. Self-reflection is important for any fighter on a losing streak and how you react when ‘it all falls down’ is the test of a true champion.
B-Side Germaine de Randamie
1. Missy Elliott – Pass That Dutch
Germaine de Randamie is a relative unknown for casual MMA fans, but her Muay Thai accomplishments speak for themselves. The Dutch fighter is a 5x world champion and once ran off a 37-fight win streak before turning to MMA full-time.
2. Kid Cudi – Heart of a Lion
De Randamie entered the UFC with a 3-2 record but recorded a tough split decision victory in her first fight with the promotion. Her second fight in the UFC didn’t go as well, she ran into a young and hungry Amanda ‘Lionness’ Nunes. It so happens that Nunes is now UFC bantamweight champion and setting her sights on the winner of the featherweight title at UFC 208.
3. Canibus – Second Round KO
Germaine bounced back nicely from her loss to Nunes by scoring a second round TKO victory over Larissa Pacheco at UFC 185. She followed that performance with a first round TKO of Anna and sits in prime position to become the first UFC featherweight champion.
4. 12 Stones – Anthem for the Underdog
It’s not often that a fighter on a two-fight winning streak, both by TKO, enters a fight as the underdog to a fighter coming in with a two-fight losing streak, but that’s exactly what we see with de Randamie vs Holm. Holm’s highlight KO of Rousey makes her the more known and de facto favorite in the match-up but it’s Germaine with the momentum entering UFC 208.
5. The Beastie Boys – No Sleep Till Brooklyn
All that’s left for Holly and Germaine is to stand in the center of the octagon at UFC 208 and see who’s the best fighter in the UFC 145lb division, sorry Cyborg. The newest UFC division will have its first champion crowned at the promotion's first fight at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
